It's a little late to start this year, but a random challenge I thought
would be interesting would be to see how many days into the year you could
go with seeing a new county or state bird for the year. Presumably you
would want to go birding very little in the beginning to stretch out the
winter birds until spring. For counties you couldn't go all year, but
could you make it to the end of May? Or June? Some counties might be
easier. Or the whole state would be fun too if you had time.
Something else fun I thought of was instead of doing a big year in your
county/state, do a big day once each month and see how many birds that
would get you. A full concentrated day that hits lots of habitats seems
like it would be fun to do as the seasons change.
For myself, I am wondering if I can find 100 birds in my yard for 2019.
I've seen 112 over the last several years, though most years I only see
60-80. As some of you may know, I have started a veggie farm here at home,
so I spend a lot of time out in my field behind my house. I think that if
I keep binoculars close by, I can get closer to 100 birds. It may be out
of reach, but its fun to try, and a fun excuse to pay attention to the
skies and sounds while I am working on the farm. I'm off to a good start
with Rough-legged Hawk and Black Phoebe. Now if I could just get the
Northern Shrike that was here all fall to come back for 2019..
