Around noon today at Marine Park in Vancouver my birding companions and I
observed what we believe to be a male Tufted Duck or hybrid that was hanging
out in a group of Greater Scaup. The tuft was rather short leading me to
believe this may be a first winter bird. Also, the back coloration of the bird
appeared to be darker than the Greater Scaup it was with, but more of a dark
gray than black as depicted in most of the field guides, which makes me wonder
if this may be a hybrid bird. I did manage to get a fair picture and will post
it if I can figure out how to do that.
