I found Tricolored Blackbirds setting up to nest in two areas in the Klamath Basin today. This morning I found at least 100 birds along the Tule Lake Auto Tour. They were located along the first leg, shortly before the right-angle turn to the south, and for the first few hundred feet after the turn. Then this evening I found two groups along Algoma Road north of Klamath Falls. This is the road that goes SE from Hwy 97 at Hagelstein Park. The first group was just a few hundred feet beyond Hagelstein Park, and the second group was 1.1 miles farther up the road. The birds in both areas were in large stands of stinging nettle. These stands have bare dead stems 4+ feet tall, and then new growth about 2' tall under it. The birds are perching and singing from the bare stems, and the females are dropping into the new growth. Males are singing but not yet into heavy-duty displays. I did not see any birds carrying nesting material so I suspect they have not started building. Other sightings: 1 Lesser Goldfinch near Tule Lake visitors center. Still quite a few Wilson's Warblers passing through Wayne Wayne
