Yesterday was a perfect birding day in Tillamook. Partially cloudy with
sunbreaks, warm, not the slightest breeze.
But there was wind somewhere, sometime, because high surf was running in
spite of calm local conditions.
I was thinking of past pelagic trips through these Barview Jetties;
wondering if I'd want to be out there in a small boat in these waves;
while photographing distant gulls against Three Arch Rocks. Hopes of
enlarging them later to identify the gulls? (Upper left 2 panels.)
There was incidental catch in the photos. These boats were likely out
there precisely because of the high surf.

Fortunately no Oregon PelagicBirders have had need (yet?) of the services
of these famous Coast Guard* Motor Lifeboats*. I'd never even seen
one until yesterday. Seemed to be a training exercise. Maybe tests for
seasickness? Perhaps the reason for 2 was that one could rescue the other
if it got into trouble.

*Range: 200 nmi (370 km; 230 mi) cruising*
*Complement: 4 crew, 5 passengers *
(Hmmm 5 at a time? You wouldn't want one to have to come back for you. In
these modern times is it still women & children first?)
