I hope that you all are enjoying the holiday weekend and staying safe.
We have been considering investing in a telephoto lens for our canon DSL
camera. I’ve been using a Nikon B700 superzoom for years for ID purposes.
While I love its portability, weight and zoom, it leaves something to be
desired in photo quality.
We rented a Canon 100-400 from Pro Photo Supply in Portland for the
weekend. We’ve enjoyed using it, but it was a bit heavier than we
anticipated and it’s pretty expensive. We’ve also been considering an
equivalent lens made by Tamron or Sigma, which are both much less
expensive, lighter, and appear to be pretty good (maybe not Canon good, but
maybe good enough).
We’re likely going to make our decision before year end. We would
appreciate any comments or feedback from the collective wisdom of the
Oregon birding community. I often seen people using a variety of photo
gear while out birding and admire the high-quality photos that often get
posted here and on eBird.
