Four of us from the Salem/ Silverton area had close-up views of approx. 100
Tundra and Trumpeter Swans at the intersection of Elkin Road & Smith Road in
Polk County yesterday, Jan. 24th. This is just west of Helmick State Park. Good
opportunity for close study of both species and the differences in calls and
head patterns...Busy rural road so we parked on Smith Rd side to stay safe.
A search on nearby roads for White-tailed Kites (often seen in previous years)
ended in failure - though we did find a leucistic Northern Harrier that fooled
us for a minute.
Earlier in the morning we visited a backyard in north Corvallis that had two
Common Redpolls, a Nashville Warbler, a Townsend's Warbler , some YR Warblers
and many other more common species. (Directions for access on Willamette
Valley listserv.) The Redpolls were life birds for a couple of us. Great
backyard and thanks were sent to the owner for allowing access.
Good Birding,
John Thomas
Silverton
