I believe the whole genus makes such calls, but Swainson's come in May and
leave in Sept.. We really only know them as a breeder. Bluebirds make similar
noises, as do the whincahts, wheatears and Stonchats in the Palearctic. Lars

Thanks for the post Tim. I also had Swainson's Thrush singing and calling
yesterday evening in my backyard in NE Washington County. I know they can be
variable in their calls but my question is has any of you heard its
chatter/laugh call? Back in July of 2003 along Gods Valley Road in Nehalem
bay I recorded and witnessed a SWTH doing this very same thing. I never grew
up around their breeding grounds but always heard them sing during spring
migration but never had experienced this so my other question is do any of
you know if this specific call is only on breeding grounds and what/if it has
any purpose. I was able to get a recording of it as well if interested. Here
is my report from yesterday. Thank you!

I stepped out the back door at my place in Coos Bay a few minutes ago (around

Pretty cool start to the day!
