A Steller's Jay was gathering twigs for a nest today in my front yard. With dozens of tree species (wild and cultivated) and 1000's of trees nearby (including many normal, wild filberts) it choose live twigs from a small, contorted filbert tree; the only one around. Since they were live twigs they required considerable tussling and tugging to remove. It took a beakful at a time. Interesting that it appears to like these contorted twigs, and logically they would weave together more strongly than straight twigs. A logical Jay i guess. Undoubtedly, evolution in action.
