Could I have heard a nighthawk "booming" this evening? I heard it 4 times over 2-3 minutes, spread over about 1/3 mile of distance along the hill above my house. It was a little distant so I'm not 100% positive. I hear the sound routinely here every year but don't know if one would be performing dives yet?

Hello Obolers,
I hope this works. I've been trying to ask this question since the morning of
May 8th, but apparently my emails have not gotten through to the list.

Hello active birders,
This morning (5/8) at about 4:oo, before any of the diurnal birds had begun
singing, I heard the squeaky call I associate with 'some kind of goat sucker or
night jar.' Has anyone else seen or heard any of these birds in the area? Does
it seem early for they of the shortest breeding season known to (local) birds
to be arriving?
Thank you in advance for any light you can shed,
Isabella

PS After writing this, I also posted about it on, well, facebook, and a birding
friend mentioned that a Common Nighthawk had been observed in Sacramento on May
5th...
