Not many to report. Did see a RING-NECKED PHEASANT in the Simpson Park
neighborhood of North Bend this evening. Not your typical pheasant habitat
as it is heavily forested. I strongly suspect it was an escapee. We use to
have them in the open grasslands on the N. Spit of Coos Bay 10 yrs. back
but that area has transitioned into shore pine forest so there isn't much
habitat left for them out there. I remember watching a camo clothed guy
releasing a pheasant there about 10 yrs. back. His pint-sized son, also in
camo, began blasting away at it within a few minutes. Anyhow, pheasants on
the southeast coast have become really rare (report-wise) in the last
decade.
Last weekend one SAY'S PHOEBE was still present at the Doris Place Boat
Ramp barns east of Coos Bay where Joe Metzler found two a couple months
back (only one present in Jan. and Feb.). These birds usually disappear
soon and migrate out to wherever they breed.
Rufous Hummers (at least one male) have been at our feeders the last few
days in Coos Bay. They should head north as soon as the weather clears-
maybe tomorrow. Been major wet and windy here the last few days. Our
feeders are swamped with Annas, mostly males, no juvies yet.
