Quick update on the sick Anna’s male that was at our feeder. On Sunday the 23rd
we were finally able to capture the hummer and took him in to the Audubon Care
Center. I checked on the bird today and found out that they had to euthanize
it, sadly. The notes written about the hummer said he had a “fractured tongue”.
The woman reading the report had never heard of that, nor had I, but that was
the reason for the euthanasia. There was no mention of a fungal infection,
however, it’s possible it had one and it wasn’t recorded (So said the Audubon
lady). The tongue issue was the major problem that could not fixed. We were
wondering if maybe the bird had struck a window and actually damaged its tongue
that way? Anyone ever heard of a fractured hummingbird tongue? Anyway, I wish
we had better news. Our feeder has been thoroughly cleaned and bleached and new
nectar made for it…and we have had at least one other male Anna’s, a female
Anna's, and a Rufous (not sure what sex) visiting it. All seem healthy.

Update? Still seeing your sick bird? What part of town/which town are you in?

The very kind woman at the Audubon wildlife rehab center did say if I could
somehow catch it, put it in a suitable container and bring it into them,
they’d try to treat the little guy. Angela, that’s what my husband
mentioned…that we could (hopefully) notice when the bird is just not able to
fly away and collect it then. Then we hope that it isn’t too late to save it.

I did rehab for many years, and as long as she is transporting him to a
wildlife center then she should be fine. It's no different than catching a
bird with a broken wing or any other injury.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to catch him other than to hopefully be
around when he doesn't have enough strength to fly away.
Good luck

As far as I know it is illegal for you to catch it, unless someone knows
otherwise. Presumably the rehab staff are allowed to do their work but I
thought they had to have the bird caught by someone with a permit.

We have one male Anna's that has been coming to our feeder
regularly...about 2 days ago he started sitting on the perch for hours at
a time, bill pointed straight up and body bobbing a bit, like he was
panting. He'd try to drink but I don't think he was successful. I called
Audubon after I found on line that he probably has a fungal infection of
his tongue which is now swollen and protruding from his beak. They said
if we could catch it somehow and bring it into the wildlife rehab center,
they could treat it. There's the rub: we have no idea how to catch it. We
have no net. It's still well enough to fly away to our nearby crabapple
when we get too close. It's been SO hard to watch this poor little guy
who is essentially starving to death. He's struggling. This is almost too
much for me...any suggestions? I know, I know....because nature. Still,
my soft heart is breaking for this little guy.
