After watching the Broncos win, woo hoo, Jim and I drove to the Tangent eagle
roost area to see the Short Eared Owls. It was a bit too dark to count eagles,
but we could see the trees were very full. We drove slowly along McLagen and
right at 5:15 the owls seems to materialize out of nowhere above the field near
the eagle roost. We counted 19 in all. As we watched, 14 of them flew north
and then west across the road to the fields along Seward. We turned the truck
around and counted 5 more in the eagle roost field and then turned up Seward to
see where the 14 owls went. We saw several hunting in the field on the north
side of Seward so we stopped the truck, lowered the windows, and turned the
engine off. We could hear them vocalizing to each other which was really cool.
We watched for about 15 minutes until it was too dark to see. We could also
hear a Great Horned Owl hooting from the trees across the field. We think 5 pm
is a good time to be there, maybe a little earlier.
