Just got an email suggesting
*Boy, that sure sounds like a Pygmy Owl. * an OBOLe
I should have added originally that I'm very familiar with Pygmy Owl and it
was definitely not a higher pitched 'toot' but rather a low pitched 'hoot'.
Although the cadence was similar the pitch was quite different.

While experienced people are discussing owl calls, I have a separate
question.
A few springs ago, while camping at Carrizo Plain in Southern California,
an owl was
calling a single 'hoot' incessantly for hours from the surrounding, mostly
chaparral.
They were spaced about 20-30 sec apart as I recall.
I wanted this to be a Flammulated Owl which would be out of range there,
but decided it was likely
a Long Eared. Sadly I don't have much experience with either. Opinions?
