Those who've had the pleasure of being interviewed by the fourth
estate have no doubt also had the pleasure of being either misquoted
or quoted grossly out of context.
Global climate change is a hot topic (and should be), but my experience
has been that media types are looking for very specific responses to a
topic that is better served by nuance.
According to Washington's Big Book of Birds (Wahl, Tweit and Mlodinow
2005) "Jewett et al (1953) described them as rare permanent residents
on extreme sw Washington, and speculated they may have been more common
formerly..." The specimen record, apparently, does not support the "more
common formerly" part...
The range expansion of California Scrub Jay in all directions is more
probably linked to suburbanization and the landscape choices that go
along with conversion of farmland to backyards...
Here in Astoria we have no oaks and never had oaks. We have European
Hawthorns, holly, non-native apples and neighbors who put out peanuts in
the shell...
