As a would-be grammatician I shudder every time I see the appearance of the
dread apostrophe. Probably a wannabe grammatician is more appropriate in my
case since I have noticed several more competent grammaticians on obol. I'm
pretty sure I've read at least one and probably more expositions on the
correct spelling of a certain Island by none other than Jeff Gilligan.
Confused as usual I resorted to Wikipedia. What more can I say?

Chipping Sparrows used to nest on Sauvie's Island, particularly Oak Island
when it was an open oak forest that was grazed. They also nested near a
few houses with lawns and oak trees and sometimes those with Douglas firs.
Chipping Sparrows have greatly declined in the Portland area in the past
50 years.
