Greetings, Birders,
The Santiam Pass Christmas Bird Count will once again be held on New Year's
Day: Friday, January 1, 2016. There is no better way to start the New Year
than spending a crisp winter day with friends in the central Oregon
Cascades.

There are 9 Sno-Parks within the Santiam Pass CBC circle, and if we have
snow by then, we will need multiple XC Ski and/or snowshoe teams. If the
snow doesn't fall by then, we will have better vehicle and foot access to
the count circle, always with enough snow for 1 snow-bound team. We will
meet at the Santiam Sno-Park from 830-9 am, and we will hold the countdown
at 4 pm at a place to be determined (Hoodoo, if it's open). Owlers are
welcome and encouraged!

NOTE: *This will be my last season as compiler for the Santiam Pass CBC*,
so if you have any interest in being a future compiler, you should
definitely attend this season. It is generally a very easy count to
coordinate, as we typically only get 5-15 people, depending on the weather,
and we average about 500 birds of 32 species. Piece of cake!

Please visit this link to see a summary from 2015
<http://www.paradisebirding.com/SantiamCBCBirds>, with the averages listed
for the last 18 years. We have tallied a total of about 85 species in the
count history, including 9 different woodpeckers and such local rarities as
Long-tailed Duck, Green Heron, Northern Shrike, and Pine Grosbeak.

If you are the least bit interested in attending, please respond to this
email and I will put you on the list.
I hope to see you on Santiam Pass to celebrate New Year 2016!

Steve Shunk
