*SAS SHORTS: FAIRVIEW WETLANDS BIRD WALK SUMMARY*
*April 24, 2019*
Hello Birders:
On Wednesday afternoon, I led our SAS Shorts bird walk to Fairview Wetlands
in Salem. It was nice except for the wind (12 – 15 mph). We had partly
sunny skies with temperatures ranging from 64 to 65 degrees during the
walk. Thirteen (13) other birders joined me for the walk. We walked
across to the west pond and then walked the trail around the wetlands. We
identified (saw or heard) 26 species.
Most notable sightings:
· The most notable sighting was a *Solitary Sandpiper* on the eastern edge
of the main pond. The sandpiper was surrounded by eight (8) *Least
Sandpipers*. It was nice that the group could see the size difference
between the two species at close range;
· We observed three warbler species including *Common Yellowthroat*
(heard), two *Orange-crowned Warblers* and two *Yellow-rumped Warblers*;
· We also heard a *Sora* on the pond just east of the small bridge at the
entrance of the trail;
· Another interesting sighting was a crow chasing a *Northern Harrier*
high in the air. We normally see harriers flying low over fields.
