*SAS SHORTS: FAIRVIEW WETLANDS BIRD WALK SUMMARY*
*April 24, 2017*
Hello Birders:
On Monday afternoon, I led our SAS Shorts field trip to Fairview Wetlands.
It was very cloudy with a continuous threat of rain. The temperature was
52 degrees and the rain held off until the very end when we did get a
soaking. Thirteen (13) other birders joined me for the walk. We walked
down to the west pond and then walked around the main trail which was about
a one mile walk. We identified (saw or heard) 20 bird species. Overall it
was a very productive walk as noted below.
Most notable sightings:
· At the southeast end of the main trail we noticed a flock of warblers
in the trees on the right side of the trail. We watched the warblers for
quite a few minutes. There were at least six *Common Yellowthroats*,
a *Black-throated
Gray Warbler* and an *Orange-crowned Warbler *in the flock. We also saw a
couple of other *Common Yellowthroats* with one male being somewhat
cooperative where everyone got to see it;
· Some birders in the group also saw a *MacGillvray’s Warbler* along the
main trail;
· We also heard four *Virginia Rails* around the main trail’s pond. We
tried to find them in the reeds with no success but could tell where they
were moving about;
· On the west pond we saw two *Canada Geese* with three goslings as well
as some *Mallards*, *Northern Shovelers* and *Green-winged Teal*;

at *Minto-Brown
Island Park* on *Wednesday, May 3rd at 7:00 AM*. Meet in parking lot #3
