*SAS SHORTS: CASCADES GATEWAY PARK FIELD TRIP SUMMARY*
*May 27, 2016*
Hello Birders:
Fred led our SAS Shorts field trip to Cascades Gateway Park this morning.
It was a nice morning that was mostly cloudy with temperatures between 54
and 59 degrees. Seven (7) other birders joined Fred for the field trip.
We walked around Walter Wirth Lake which was about a one mile walk. The
habitat at the south end of the lake was wonderful with oaks and conifers
attracting numerous birds. We identified (saw or heard) 40 species of
birds.
*Most notable sightings:*
- As far as raptors go we saw two *Osprey*, a *Bald Eagle*, a *Turkey
Vulture* and a *Cooper’s Hawk*. We saw what appeared to be a *Cooper’s
Hawk* nest across the bridge and to the left in a tree;
- Some in the group saw a *Rufous Hummingbird*;
- On the south end of the lake there was quite a bit of activity
including *Red-breasted Nuthatch*, *White-breasted Nuthatch*, *Western
Wood-Pewee* and several *Bewick’s Wrens*;
- We observed a *Yellow Warbler* and a *Wilson’s Warbler* as well
as hearing several other Yellow Warblers;
- We also saw a pair of *Bullock’s Orioles*, some *Black-headed
Grosbeaks* as well as a couple of *Western Tanagers*.

at Mt. Tabor Park on *Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 8:00 AM.* Meet at the
K-mart parking lot along Mission Street. The next Minto-Brown Island Park
field trip is on* Sunday, June 8th at 7:00 a.m. *Meet at parking lot #3 at
