*SAS SHORTS: CASCADES GATEWAY PARK BIRD WALK SUMMARY*
*March 27, 2019*
Hello Birders:
On Wednesday morning, Fred led our SAS Shorts bird walk to Cascades Gateway
Park. It was a cool, damp morning. Ten (10) birders joined Fred for the
walk. It was 46 to 47 degrees with little wind during the walk. We walked
around Walter Wirth Lake which was about a one-mile walk. We observed
(saw or heard) 40 species of birds.
Most notable sightings:
· One *Great Egret* was on the south end of the lake;
· An *Osprey* flew down and caught a fish then flew up to a tree to eat
it;
· An adult *Bald Eagle* flew over the lake a couple of times;
· One *Belted Kingfisher* flew across the lake giving its rattle call;
· We saw a few duck species including *Lesser Scaup,* *Common Merganser,
Mallard, Gadwall, Ruddy *and *Ring-necked Duck*;
· There was also a pair of *Greater White-fronted Geese* on the lake.
A complete list of today's birds follows. *Our next SAS field trip will be
at Minto-Brown Island Park on Monday, April 1st at 7:00 a.m. *Meet at
parking lot #3 at the end of Minto Island Road. The next *SAS Shorts*
field trip is at *Fairview Wetlands* on *Wednesday, April 24th at 5:30 p.m.*

March 30th at 10:00 AM. The workshop will be held at the ODFW, 4034
Fairview Industrial Drive SE in Salem. The cost of the workshops is only

6th). This class will also be held at the ODFW, 4034 Fairview Industrial
