The answer to this pondering is perhaps embedded in the phrase,
"additional time."
If you walked a mile along a trail at 2 mph and then doubled back at the
same speed, you'd have roughly the same chance of seeing a flyby
accipiter if you just walked that mile in one direction at half the
speed.
That of course assumes that you were paying equal attention while
walking in both directions. However when birding in teams of two or
more, there's a natural tendency to chat more and pay less attention to
birds on the way back.
What I find most interesting about these two-way hikes is how often I
encounter the best bird just as I'm getting back to the car.
