Yesterday three of us ran the Lorane Raptor Route which includes mostly areas
between Eugene and Lorane. In the 9 years that I have done the route our
previous high number of birds was 75. Yesterday we had 95, including a record
number of species (9) and record numbers for 5 species: kestrel, bald eagle,
red-shouldered, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned. There was a lot of standing water
in the fields which may have concentrated or disrupted the rodent population,
but I’m sure that other factors influenced the numbers as well.
Red-tailed hawk: 33
American kestrel: 28
Northern harrier: 5
Bald eagle: 9
Rough-legged hawk: 1
