Obolers, Portland Area Birders, I have the great fortune of having a professional conference in Portland this week. I am going in a day early and plan to spend Tuesday trying to hit a few target birds. I have been watching OBOL and the Portland area list as well as eBird postings and the eBird Oregon Rare Bird Alert. I have made similar queries to this list over the years and Oregon birders have always been very good at offering constructive suggestions. Target birds:Tundra Bean-Goose White-winger ScoterRed-necked GrebeBlack-legged KittiwakeGlaucous GullWilliamson’s sapsuckerRough-legged Hawk And some more unlikely hopes:Northern Saw-whet OwlMacGillivray's WarblerSage GrouseHarris’s SparrowPinyon JayeAmerican 3-toed Woodpecker My plan was to head up early Tuesday to Fort Stevens SP and work my way from there down to Nestucca hoping to see Kittiwake, Scoter, Gull and Grebe along the way, ending with the Goose. Hawk would be serendipity but best chance may be too far South and East of my route? Not many very recent sightings for them at this point. Things like Pinyon Jay and 3T woodpecker are probably too far South and East to hit in the same day, my next site would be Mt Hood looking for sapsucker (GPS coordinates for them were posted for them recently) and maybe end the day at Larch Mntn listening for Saw-whets (based on recent list posts). I may be able to get away from conference session for a morning or afternoon so might have one more chance for something close to Portland. Does my strategy make sense? No all sightings end up on eBird. Are there any good locations for any of these targets I should try to hit? Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.
