OBOL, Today I encountered a flock of 15-20 RED KNOTS on the beach north of Oregon Dunes Overlook and south of Carter Lake trail, Douglas co. I rarely see more than a couple at a time. This is probably the biggest flock I have encountered, of course, that is a small group compared to Maitreya's sighting a few years ago on the Lane coast. Earlier in the morning we watched a PEREGRINE FALCON in hot pursuit of a DUNLIN. The Dunlin gave an effort worthy of the life or death situation it was in. It stayed ahead and struggled to stay above the falcon. The falcon made several passed, but missed each time. The Dunlin then began flying in a large spiral and started gaining altitude. The falcon backed off and attempted another pass, but could not get above the Dunlin. Both birds proceeded to gain altitude until I could no longer track the Dunlinwith my binoculars. I could still see the falcon, but when I took my eyes off for just a moment I could not find them again, so am not sure the outcome. The Dunlin seemed to be doing all the right things to survive. Yesterday on the Waxmyrtle trail at Siltcoos, Lane county we saw a BLACK BEAR in the 250 lb range. Not bird news, but exciting for me as I had managed to avoid them up to that point. Now just need a Cougar sighting... Daniel Farrar Dunes City, Oregon jdanielfarrar@xxxxxxxxx
