Thank you Alan for posting for me this morning. I don't own an iPhone & didn't have a way to email at the time.

I arrived at Malheur HQ at 7:30 this morning. I saw about 6 or so Spotted Towhees scratching around on the ground on the west side of the HQ building near the orchard, and many more towhees were vocalizing from the sage on the south side. It was clear that there had been a major towhee movement over night, since I didn't see nearly that many over the past two days.

I saw an adult towhee about 8 or so feet up in the hawthorne tree near the restrooms. It caught my eye for two reasons: it sat facing me completely motionless (as compared to the other very active towhees), and I noticed that the white in the outer undertail feathers was extensive--coming all the way up to nearly the undertail coverts. From my angle, I could see at least half of the wing, but not the back. There was no white in the shoulder or the rest of the wing that I was able see. I left to check a book in the nature store to see if there are any Spotted Towhees that look like that, and I couldn't find any information that there are. I went back to the hawthorne, but the bird was no longer there.

I left a little while later, but Rick Vetter, Joan Suther and Don Sutherland looked for several hours and did not locate the bird I saw. I'll look for it again tomorrow morning.
