Dan and Anne Heyerly had an intriguing grosbeak visit their yard on Friday that
was tentatively identified as a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. It was posted to the
Lane RBA WhatsApp group and subsequently, a few other birders have seen the
bird. I saw it this morning and discussed it with the hosts....it appears to
be mostly a Rose-breasted Grosbeak with a few Black-headed Grosbeak
traits......like 2nd or 3rd generation.
The most striking Black-headed Grosbeak trait is the yellowish-orange stripe
that runs from the chest down through the vent. The culmen is a bit darker
than I would expect from a pure Rose-breasted Grosbeak and the chest streaking
is somewhat intermediate.
Anyway, it is an intriguing bird and I thought that I would open it up to a
wider audience than the WhatsApp group(s).
