I spent forty minutes of uninterupted observation this morning (3/22)
without detecting a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. There were two desultory songs by
Savannah Sparrows and a constant chorus of Meadowlarks. Violet=green Swallows
were much in evidence upon my arrival, but moved along. An impressive kettle of
Turkey Vultures against the hill west of the refuge turned out to be eight or
nine birds when I counted them. I was sure there was at least a dozen. At times
it contained an adult Bald Eagle and adult Red-tailed Hawk.
Northern Harriers prominent over the prairie, but Rough-legs absent, as they
were initially on Sunday. By the time I left on Sunday, after a two or three
hour vigil, there were two easily seen from the deck.
