Hi Nick and Maureen - thanks for sharing this intriguing link. I heard
something very similar to this last June in Portland. I, too, got pretty
excited and was trying to turn it into an Ovenbird. What I discovered, was
that it was actually an American Goldfinch singing a short, repetitive,
song. I speculate that’s what this is, too. From Birds of the World:
“Disjunct song is comprised of individual phrases every 1–2 s, but with
much variation. Some versions involve repeating the same phrase over and
over again, thus sounding much like the songs of many warbler species, but
some versions incorporate immediate variety. Complex song often given in
flight, but disjunct song rarely so. *Disjunct song often heard between
counter-singing males.*
I’ve bolded this last bit, as if you listen closely, you can actually hear
another bird in the recording singing a very similar song, albeit much more
softly. If you click on the sixth link entitled Short (Short), you’ll find
a somewhat similar recording.

I’m not an expert on Ovenbird song, but it sounds a little better for an
American Goldfinch, especially with a second individual on the recording
counter signing, than the former. Just my two cents.
