Hello OBOLers,
The 90th Portland CBC was held today in frigid/windy/sunny conditions.
Over 200 field observers found 113 species, and more may emerge from
Feeder Watcher reports. Enormous, heartfelt thanks to the Area Leaders:
Colby Neuman, Dan Strong, Lynn Herring, Lori Hennings, and Eric
Scheuering. They shouldered the lion's share of work on this grand
adventure, and without them this “Largest CBC in the US” would quickly
devolve into chaos!
The day's “best” bird was a Say's Phoebe, which is a new species for the
count and earned Mary Coolidge the coveted Eagle Eye Award.
Congratulations, Mary! Other good birds included Turkey Vulture and
Redhead, and multiple yellow-shafted Northern Flickers. Surprising
misses included Tundra Swan and Eurasian Wigeon. Wink Gross is currently
collecting and sorting through a mountain of Feeder Watcher reports, so
it's possible something else will arise in the upcoming number-crunching
phase. I'll keep you posted.
Meanwhile, Happy New Year and Good Birding!
