Sent this earlier from my yahoo account. I don't see it on the OBA OBOL archives (through present time), so I am forwarding it from my gmail account. See further down for link to pictures of the bird we saw. (see link further down if you just want to see the photos right away!) Initial very short-term impressions by the less experienced (me, for example) were L.B. Dowitcher, but bill too short; then Short-Billed Dowitcher; but even then the bill seems too short and a tiny bit down-curved. The rufous/red/salmon color of the breast does not span the area completely, leaving white around the edges. I've not seen that in Dowitchers, but I don't have a great deal of experience with them. The head does not (yet?) have the red color and the eye-stripe seems weak for a Knot. But perhaps it's not in full alternate plumage yet. Black legs. White lower Breast and belly. Not much to see under the wings... nor on the tail I've never seen a Red Knot, and was not familiar with them even from field guides, but our best birder (Floyd Weitzel) said, after a considerable amount of looking, he thought it might be a Red Knot. He doesn't label birds unless he has some degree of confidence about them and he looked long and hard at this bird in his spotting scope and was never completely sure about it. I think the photos show enough of the birds features to identify it. So I'm dying to find out what it really is! Perhaps related, perhaps gnot, I've included (at the end of the album) a flock of shorebirds which flew by the area of this solitary unknown bird at one point, because perhaps they are the same species? Their bills look too long though. Okay, but still, what are they? We walked out Royal to the observation platform, and saw the mystery bird from there, looking SouthWest about 200 or 300 yards (in the general direction of Pelican island). Along the way, we enjoyed Bitterns flying in pairs - possibly two pairs coming by again and again almost as if challenging us to get a good photo of them - which I didn't. Good looks at Yellowthroat, Savannah Sparrows, Marsh Wrens. Heard Sora a number of times and some folks could hear the Bittern once in a while. I heard one there last week but I couldn't hear it today over the chatter of our group. Never did get rained on in spite of the threatening clouds all morning. Wasn't even cold really. Very pleasant morning out there, enjoyed by all 15-20 of us. I will be adding photos of the other birds to this album in the next couple days so if interested check the link again in a few days. Another photographer will be sending me what he got out there today and he gets a lot that I miss. picasa album<https://picasaweb.google.com/117022188463884927347/FernRidgeRoyalPossibleRedKnotMay82014?authuser=0&feat=directlink> [image: image]<https://picasaweb.google.com/117022188463884927347/FernRidgeRoyalPossibleRedKnotMay82014?authuser=0&feat=directlink> Picasa Web Albums - Priscilla Nam Har... - Fern Ridge Ro...<https://picasaweb.google.com/117022188463884927347/FernRidgeRoyalPossibleRedKnotMay82014?authuser=0&feat=directlink> Photos by Priscilla Nam Har..., May 8, 2014 View on picasaweb.google.com<https://picasaweb.google.com/117022188463884927347/FernRidgeRoyalPossibleRedKnotMay82014?authuser=0&feat=directlink> Preview by Yahoo Priscilla Sokolowski =====================================
