One day after the Silverton CBC, I located a LONG-EARED OWL in a thick
grove of 20-25 year old Douglas Fir. It was perched next to a trunk about
30' up. Getting photos was difficult among all the branches and I tried
not to disturb it. True to its character, it stayed still, close to a
trunk and was well camouflaged, I must admit that it was a couple of
scolding Stellar's Jays that alerted me to the vicinity. A good reminder
that scolding Corvids might be worth a look see.
This is the first LEOW reported for the Silverton CBC day or week, and
makes a total of 11 owl species for this count circle over its history.
This site is on private and inaccessible property east of Silverton, so I
won't disclose the location specifics, also to minimize impact to the owl.
On April 11th earlier this year, I heard what I noted as LEOW hoots from
this location.
Here are some photos that were challenging to get through all the branches.
