Thank you for sharing your wonderful images showing the mating of a pair of
Bald eagles, Jim! I literally was going to write OBOL this morning to ask if
others might share WHEN the Baldies mate and begin their laying/nesting as I’m
able to look directly at the active nest on Ross Island in South Waterfront
here in Portland due to being on the 25th floor of the Ardea Apartment Bldg
with an upriver view. I’d already used _The Birder’s Handbook_ and learned
they usually lay 2 (1-3) eggs and that both species incubate the eggs 34 - 36
days. BUT I had no idea WHEN things got underway as I’ve never lived near the
species previously. It is wonderful to watch them court in the air with talons
down, interlocking and tumbling. I look forward to the experience. For those
familiar with South Waterfront and Ross Island, the nest is readily visible
from the Green Beltway at the moment as the trees haven’t leaved out. It is
located in the row of taller trees present south of the Old Spaghetti Factory
but north of Aqua Riva and the birds are often vocal now, but I don’t believe
the female has begun laying.
For the birds,

A pair of Bald Eagles were celebrating Valentines Day a few days early. I
photographed this pair of Bald Eagles from Coville Rd. looking up at the top
of Baskett Butte at Baskett Slough NWR. Even with a large lens they were at a
great distance so photo quality is poor. I have been doing bird photography
for 71/2 years and have seen ducks and other birds mate but never Bald
Eagles. The first photo is the pair mating the rest are afterwards.
