Oregon's first record was offshore, seen in 1998, a megararity for sure.
It was another 10 years before Oregon's second record, a dead bird in Coos
Bay. Oregon's third record was another offshore bird (actually a 2005
record that must have been accepted late). It certainly seemed like a
species that one would only see offshore or maybe find dead on a beach if
it was to be found here in Oregon. Then in 2009 the unbelievable happened,
a bird was spotted by Suzanna Eggler on 28 October in Coos Bay while she
was fishing in the bay with her husband. Even more unbelievable, the bird
stayed through 8 December when it either died or decided to head out. That
is a total of 41 days in Coos Bay, something I never thought would happen
again.
Then there was suddenly a spat of records and this species has now been
seen 19 times since 2009, not drawing quite the awe it did for some back in
the "early" days. Seven of those records are from well birded Lincoln
County and four from Tillamook. Were any around near as long as the first
Coos bird?
This year the Coos Bird, found by Sabine Berzins on 24 August (word not
getting out until 27 August) and still present today, has now been in Coos
Bay 38 days, will it break the old Coos record of 41 days? It's looking
good at this point, weather forecast looking excellent for the next week.
Sure was fun watching it fly around the bay from the BLM office in North
Bend today, she flies very shearwater like so easy to pick out even though
that part of the bay is loaded with cormorants fly all which ways.
I was going through my page a day calendar today and grabbed an old page to
write some notes on. When I turned it over, the day was from 24 August
this year and the species was(!), my jaw hit the floor...
