After spending a few days under the weather Dave and I decided to go out and do
some car birding.
Our first stop was at a huge dairy hosting hundreds of blackbirds and cowbirds.
Both times we have visited this dairy we estimated 450 cowbirds, which is by
far the most wintering cowbirds in the state that we are aware of. It is
located south of Newberg along Hwy 219 just south of the Willamette River. The
dairy is on Raybell Road NE on the west side of 219. On the east side of 219
the road is named Champoeg rare NE. It is about a mile south of the river
crossing.
Just north of Raybell Road along the east side of Hwy 219 is a pullout for the
Willamette Post Historical Marker. East of the road is a wetlands and a Great
Blue Heron rookery. In the wetlands were a pair of EURASIAN WIGEON and a boldly
marked male COMMON TEAL (Eurasian form of Green-winged Teal). Exact location
