I think some of these gulls also roost on the big gravel-pit lakes near the
freeway in SE Salem. I saw a big wad coming over Ankeny area heading south at
dawn a couple of weeks ago.

Earlier posts on Obol have referred to the winter gull roost at Waverly
Lake in Albany. There are frequently large flocks of gulls feeding in
cultivated fields from Albany to south of Brownsville. I've always assumed
they were the gulls at Waverly Lake. On one occasion I saw the flock in
Tangent , less than two miles west of I-5 on Hwy 20 take flight and move
towards Albany in a somewhat disorderly manner at sunset. Dave Irons has
noted gulls around Brownsville flying towards Fern Ridge in the evening.
Around three Sunday afternoon there were many hundred gulls in the white
clover field on Hwy 20 in Tangent. The bulk were MEW GULLS, over 80%. The
next in abundance were RING-BILLED GULLS. There were as few as two score
pink-foots, mostly Glaucous-wing. Most noteworthy was a WESTERN GULL.
An hour and some later we found about 100 gulls on Davis Road, a few
miles southwest of the first group. They were all pink-foots. At 4:30 70 of
them took flight and headed sw, the direction of Fern Ridge Reservoir. A few
minutes later the rest got on the wing , about 30 birds, and also went sw.
