The NAMC tradition has been hit by a double whammy: Fading participation
plus Cornell's launch of its so-called "Global Big Day" on the same day
as NAMC.
I no longer see this as a battle worth fighting. NAMC is continuing in a
few counties where participants still see it as a fun event, that brings
them into contact with other birders in their county. I've told
coordinators in those counties that I'll continue to compile their
results.
But for most county coordinators, this seems to have turned into more of
a chore than a fun thing to do. So -- even though I was trying to keep
it going -- I can't see the point anymore.
Cornell's "Global Big Day" is being touted by some as a replacement for
NAMC, but it fails in many ways. If the only goal is to maximize the
species tally for a given region, then we're falling into the "Big Day"
mode of birding.
I don't see a fruitful path for NAMC to continue in this environment, at
least not statewide. I'll still keep compiling results for counties that
want to participate in the traditional format, as long as they want to
keep that going.
