There may have been a residual population of wild hatched Bobwhite in Salem 55
years ago. But ODF&W was already using Chukar for put and take at that time.
And their eggs, or already hatched chicks, were available mail order then,
quite cheap. People like them for training dogs. Chukars have been reported
repeatedly from east Portland on Obol in the midst of vast residential

bird: Chukar in Salem I was ten years old when a Chukar showed up on Christmas
Day on our patio in south Salem. Looked it up in my Granny’s Peterson Field
Guide and that’s when I became hooked on birding. Haven’t seen a Chukar around
here since. My Life List also includes a Bobwhite in the Liberty School
playground. Teacher asked me to ID it as a 5th grader (it was a sick patient
that hung around for a couple days). Perhaps these birds were bred nearby. This
