Tom McNamara found and identified this owl, with us present. He/we first
thought it was a pygmy owl, until he looked at his pictures. Jan's pictures
are on the flckr site below. Jan and Will Risser, Portland

Jan's pictures. Doesn't seem to have as much white in the face as a lot of
pictures of saw-whets but it looks like a saw-whet to us too. I Sent the
pictures to Rhett Wilkins the owl guy who called me who said he thought that
it was a saw-whet just by the fact that it was roosting inconspicuously
during the day. He also said that it is a rare experience to see a roosting
saw-whet in the Portland area. I guess this is an even better sighting than
a pygmy; thanks again!
