More on Hermit vs Swainson's Thrush
I’ve been following the thread about primary emargination in Hermit Thrushes
with interest. Searching for photos showing the difference between the
primaries of Hermit and Swainson’s,
I found several photos of Swainson’s that seemed to show emargination on them,
too, though slightly different from that of Hermit. Below are shots of the
primaries of both species from The Feather Atlas
(https://www.fws.gov/lab/featheratlas/index.php).
So, there is some emargination in both species, though on a different number
of feathers and in different proportions. Alas, this no longer seems like a
(kind of) easy way to tell them apart with just an unusually good view. We’re
back to needing them in
hand, or having especially good photos to study at leisure. Or just rely on
“if it’s winter it’s Hermit.”
