One Osprey is back on the nest today, March 25, 2019, at NE 148th and NE
Marine Drive in Portland.
First of the year Rufous Hummingbirds arrived in my garden in NE Portland
March 21, 2019.(approximately 1 mile south of the Columbia River) The
first arrival is an adult female that is hanging around the feeder, but
seems to prefer the garden flowers. Heard a male rufous wing trill as I
walked the neighborhood on March 22, 2019. Look for Rufous Hummingbirds in
the ornamental flowering street trees, that seems to be what really draws
them in my neighborhood. My red-flowering currant is has lots of buds
showing color but is not yet in bloom.
First Varied Thrush to grace my garden in several years is a female. It
arrived March 11, 2019 and continues with the garden feeding flock. As
other people have noted, I have watched this bird and it is higher on the
pecking order than Starlings.
Golden-crowned Sparrow numbers at the feeder are fluctuating from
day-to-day.
Lesser Goldfinches becoming more colorful.
Lots of House Finches throughout the winter this year, at least a dozen.
The male plumage is now quite striking in lovely shades of rose and tan.
Not many birds with yellow or peach colored plumage this year.
