Sunday afternoon while out in the back yard many flocks of geese flew
overhead, and they were quite high up. I would guess 1,000-feet or more up
in the air. They were generally coming from an east to southeast direction
and all seemed to be heading toward the Fern Ridge area to the west of
Eugene. I would guess the total number exceeded 3,000. They passed overhead
in flock after flock over a period of approximately 30-45 minutes. I think
they are about a month early for the expected Greater White-fronted Goose
movement, and they didn't really sound right anyway. I guess they were
Cackling Geese as their necks were relatively short. They basically were
silhouettes. Some of the calls of Cacklers and G. White-fronts on Xeno-Canto
are really similar.
