I birded Malheur NWR with my husband Alan the past few days.
Unfortunately, Malheur HQ and the grounds surrounding HQ are still closed.
There was no water at the Narrows; Benson Pond was full of water; Diamond area
had lots of water in the fields along Diamond Lane.
Some highlights:
Burrowing Owl – Hwy 205 near milepost 13
Golden Eagle – on the nest with 3 babies, 1.9 miles west of Narrows RV/store
Ferruginous Hawk – adult on the large nest in the small tree east of milepost
17, Hwy 205
Yellow-breasted Chats – singing away in the thickets by the entrance to Page
Springs CG
White-faced Ibis, Bullock’s Oriole, Western Kingbird, Say’s Pheobe, Loggerhead
Shrike, Black Tern, Sage Thrasher, nesting Great Horned Owls.
Mountain Bluebird, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Lark Sparrows at Sage Hen rest area
17 miles west of Burns.
