High flying Scrub Jays in late Sep, early Oct..

I saw something today that I'd never seen before.
Xavy and I were sitting on the bench by the rear fence, and I looked up and
saw 3 Scrub Jays coming off the hill, heading towards the valley. Pretty
high, I could just make out their colors - but they had that repetitive
looping style of flying. Several wing strokes upwards, coast and dip.
Repeat.
As Xavy and I watch over the next 20 seconds or so, they were followed by 9
others. Groups of 3-4, spaced maybe 5 seconds apart. There may have been
other before I saw the first ones.
Never seen this many Scrub Jays together. And pretty high. I have a
feeling it was some seasonal movement?
[Seeing a fair amount of both Golden- and White-crowned Sparrows now with
the seed I put out.]

on the chin, and it's hard to attribute that absence here strictly to
shadow. But these are certainly not magpies. White on upper breast is too
extensive. Both pictures show a dark prong such as that which frames a
scrubjay's throat.
