Hi all,
A few birding highlights of a walk in Luckiamute State Natural Area's
north unit today included a CHIPPING SPARROW, two COMMON YELLOWTHROATS,
and a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW.
Compared with last week, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS seem to have replaced
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS as one of the more abundant singing birds.
By the boat-in campground an AMERICAN GOLDFINCH singing high in a
cottonwood got me going on the idea of an early Yellow Warbler. Seems
like I fall for that at least once every year. A few EVENING GROSBEAKS
gave buzzy calls back and forth as they munched on buds high in the
trees along the river.
Toward the end of the walk I ran into Bill Tice, who mentioned that he
had seen CLIFF SWALLOWS at the Luckiamute River bridge just outside the
entrance.
While we were talking, both of us heard a single sharp chip note that
got me thinking about Swamp Sparrow. Bill had his hopes up for a wayward
Sagebrush Sparrow. I had to head for home at that point, but hopefully
Bill was able to track it down to see what it was.
A more detailed account of the walk including non-bird flora and fauna
can be found in the Mid-valley Nature forum at:

Happy migration,
Joel
