A Brown Thrasher was recently photographed in a yard near the town of Long Beach. The photos are in "The Chinook Observer". It is the second county record in recent years. 2 adult Ruddy Turnstones were on the beach yesterday near Klipsan, as were 4 Black-bellied Plovers, 23 Whimbrels, hundreds of Semipalmated Plovers and Sanderlings, and several thousand adult Western Sandpipers. There are huge numbers (thousands) of both Heerman's Gulls and Brown Pelicans now present. A great Egret from my yard was a yard first. It took 12 years to see one here. "The Chinook Observer" also reports that the nesting island of the Am. White Pelicans was severely disturbed (Oregon side of the river up from Astoria). As many as 90 juvenile birds are believed to have died, and 30 are in rehab. The young pelicans entered the river prematurely, and could not fend for themselves. Bald Eagle attacks are thought to be the cause, but people camping nearby may have contributed to the disaster.
