Cool sequence of a “Butcher Bird” in action. Considering it is about half
to a third the weight of an American Kestrel and maybe 2-3 times the weight
of that small mammal, it seems to be handling things in ease.
I vividly recall a time growing up in Texas, laying on my back while
watching wintering Ruby-crowned Kinglets flitting around in the low
branches of a Mesquite tree. In a flash, a Loggerhead Shrike flew in and
caught one of the Kinglets. The Shrike perched there for several seconds
before flying off, unaware of my presence. Cool bird!
