Yesterday (September 21) my wife Lory and I made stops at Clear Lake and Lost
Lake in the Cascades of Linn County. Both locations were surprisingly birdy
for a chilly,. showery mid-September afternoon.
CLEAR LAKE:We were just in the area of the marina/boat docks, near the north
end of the lake. Lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers in the bushes around the lake.
Also:2 LEWIS' WOODPECKERS in treetops on NE side of the lake1 Sharp-shinned
Hawk intermittently harassing the Lewis' Woodpeckers that seemed to be slightly
larger than it.1 RED-NECKED GREBE, juvenile1 Western Grebe2 Orange-crowned
Warblers1 Wilson's Warbler1 Empidonax flycatcher3 American Dippers21 Barrow's
GoldeneyesSeveral Golden-crowned Sparrows1 River Otter fishing successfullyAlso
a chipmunk energetically feeding on a recently-dead Sooty Fox Sparrow. Seemed
odd, but I guess chipmunks are opportunists?
LOST LAKE:1 SAY'S PHOEBE in the grassy lakebed near the end of the campground
road on the north side of the lake. It was actively flycatching from perches
and calling intermittently.Lots of Golden-crowned Sparrows.
