Vickie Buck and I birded the Lincoln County Coast today. The weather was
overcast with no wind and the rain stayed away until 2pm. Not a whole lot
was actually moving but there were birds on the water.
Highlights include: two Fork Tailed Storm Petrels at Boiler Bay (reported
previously) that remained fairly close the entire time we were there, we
watched their distinctive feeding ritual of almost landing in the water
only to soar up and away, Marbled Murrelet and Cassin's Auklets, large
flock of Black Turnstones.
Hatfield: 20 Caspian Terns, a flock of 60-80 Western Sandpipers, 1
Whimbrel and 5 Short Billed Dowitchers, and (one Chuck Philo).
Yaquina Head: Thousands of Common Murres, hard to estimate 7000-10,000
possibly much more. Peregrin Falcon
South Jetty: 1 Marbled Godwit as previously reported. Missed the Say's
Phoebe
South Beach: Franklin's Gull ( thanks to Chuck Philo) and Bonapar'ts
Gull both in breeding plumage and more Whimbrels.
All in all a great day to be at the coast.
