Rich you have an amazing ear for bird songs and I believe you are right- it
comes out sounding much like a Purple Finch though! How frustrating that
must have been for Tara to make a recording that superficially sounds like
a Purple Finch and initially did not help with her early sighting! I had
to listen to it several times through to be able to “refilter” it back to a
Swainson’s Thrush. Nice job on recording it by Tara and easy to do with an
iPhone. I have recorded more than one bird on my iPhone and included it
with rare bird reports to OBRC.

Oh- I do agree with Paul, these two species usually do not sound similar at
least “in person”.

I think the original observer got it right: it's a Swainson's Thrush. The
recording does have a similar quality as Purple Finch, because the way the
electronics had filtered it all have removed all the differences of quality
between the two species.
But note that each song is the same, short length, and always begins with
3-4 introductory notes before going into the final jumble of notes. Purple
Finches now are singing extremely complex songs that are filled will
mimicry; the songs can be long or short, but they're never the same length,
they do not start the same way each time, and they aren't usually delivered
on such a regular basis.
