Peg Boulay and I saw a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER yesterday (Saturday) just N of the SE
park entrance signboard and trail 3, 6 and 2 intersection at the Howard Buford
Recreation Area (aka Mt. Pisgah). A trail-hiking birder mentioned to me 22
November she had just seen one at this location, so it may have been around
awhile. We saw it in conifer snags created in the Meadowlark Restoration area
just west of Trail 2. Western Screech-owls have been reported in the same area,
but we did not see them.
We did, however, hear a female and male GREAT HORNED OWL hooting back and forth
on the conifer knob just west of the SE entrance trail around 4 p.m. A
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was present on the other side of that trail earlier in the
afternoon. A white goose (probable SNOW GOOSE) was with a large flock of
Cacklers on private land far to the NE of the SE entrance trail. We did not
have a scope along to confirm ID. Bruce Newhouse in Eugene
